And among those who negate the vision entirely, both in the worldly life and the Hereafter, are the faction of the Mu'tazilah and some of the Imamiyyah among the Shi'ah.

They derived evidence for the absence of vision from the saying of the Exalted on the tongue of Moses—His might was mighty—when he said: [“My Lord, show me that I may look at You.” He said: “You will not see Me, but look at the mountain; if it should remain in its place, then you will see Me.”] 1 . So when his Lord manifested Himself to the mountain, He made it level, and Moses fell down unconscious—the verse. The two groups agreed on the absence of vision in the worldly life, but differed regarding the vision in the Hereafter: one negated it in both stages, and the other affirmed it in one of them, and both are in error and fallacy regarding what they believed and went toward.

Footnotes

1Surah Al-A'raf – Verse 143. On the authority of the Commander of the Faithful—His might was mighty—in a narration: And Moses asked, and there ran upon his tongue out of the praise of Allah—Majestic and Exalted is He—: “My Lord, show me that I may look at You,” so that request of his was a grave matter, and he asked for a momentous matter, so he was rebuked, and Allah the Exalted said: “You will not see Me in the worldly life until you die, then you will see Me in the Hereafter...” Source: Al-Tawhid. And this narration reinforces what came in the noble verse that the vision of Allah is realized after death, and here we mention the saying of the Commander of the Faithful—His might was mighty—to Harith al-Hamdani: “O Harith of Hamdan, whoever dies sees me / From among the believers or the hypocrites, face to face.” Source: Al-Amali by al-Tusi. And the Messenger of Allah—His might was mighty—said: “And know that you will never see your Lord until you die.” Source: Al-Ghunyah fi Mas'alat al-Ru'yah.
