Furthermore, by this corrupt belief of yours, you open a path to permissiveness and the commission of atrocities and foul deeds—since he who believes there is no watcher inspecting him over his deeds and lapses, and no reckoner questioning him about the results of those deeds so that he is punished for the evil of them and rewarded in return for the goodness of them, while he is standing upon the stage of sensory pleasures and lustful enjoyments that surround him from all sides; he whose state, belief, and reality is this, it is no wonder that he drifts along with his sensory instincts and selfish ambitions, quenching them with that toward which they yearn and which they passionately love of the pleasures of matter and the seductions of life.
