And by this manifestation, the proof (al-hujjah) becomes His against them, so that he who perishes, perishes upon evidence, and he who lives, lives upon evidence. And that there is not there [any] pleasure equaling the pleasure of His meeting and His intimate communion (munajatihi), and whoever desired that he stand upon the description of this pleasure, then let him read the books of the Sufis, the people of ecstasy (ahl al-wajd).
And there came in the Epistles of the "Brethren of Purity and Friends of Loyalty" (Ikhwan al-Safa wa Khillan al-Wafa) what this is its text: "And one of the people of unification (ahl al-tawhid) heard a man reciting: ['They said, "So what is its penalty, if you should be liars?" They said, "Its penalty is he in whose saddlebag it is found, so he is its penalty. Thus do we penalize the wrongdoers"'] 1 , so he asked for its repetition, and he shrieked and was struck unconscious, so it went out, meaning his spirit."
