"The speaker erred [who said] that we are immortal,"
All of us after the rawi (rhyme letter) are hi bin bi [Note: The text here appears phonetically corrupted or obscure in the original manuscript].
He said: He came addressing the human race with his saying:
Well then, O sons of the earth, so ask the apes,
Beguile yourselves with nonsense.
Wear in your wakefulness the garment of stagnation,
And dream in your sleep of miracles.
For a time will come, not far off,
In which the proud will manifest among you.
And Allah will descend into water and clay,
So the old man and the unlettered youth will see Him.
He intends by "Allah who descends into water and clay" the superior, perfect human, and let the reader not imagine that he intends by it the Master, the Messiah - exalted is his might - as some of the Christians believe, because he denies the immortality of the soul with an absolute denial.
