"O Mufaddal, that by which the Name manifested is the illumination of His light, and the shadow of His illumination by which the creation was individuated so that they might look at Him, and it guided them to their Creator so that they might recognize Him in the form which is the attribute of the Self (al-Nafs), and the Self is the attribute of the Essence. And the Name is invented from the self of the light of the Essence, and for that reason it was named a 'self' (nafsan), and for the sake of that is His saying: 'And Allah warns you of Himself', and I warn you against making Muhammad a manufactured [created] being, [for if so] the Essence would be originated and manufactured, and this is the explicit disbelief. And know, O Mufaddal, that there is nothing between the Unique (al-Ahad) and the One (al-Wahid) except like what is between movement and stillness, or between the Kaf (الكاف) and the Nun (النون), due to his connection to the light of the Essence,

subsisting by its essence. And it is His, the Almighty's, saying: 'Have you not considered your Lord - how He extends the shadow, and if He willed, He could have made it stationary? Then We made the sun for it an indicator' meaning what was in it of the Essence. And the Anza'i Form (al-Surah al-Anza'iyyah) is the illumination and the shadow, and it is that which does not change in the ancient of ages nor in what occurs of times. So its exoteric (zahir) is the Anza'i Form, and its esoteric (batin) is the Meaning (al-ma'nawiyyah)."

"And that Form is the substance of substances (hayula al-hayulat), and the doer of the done-unto (fa'ilat al-maf'ulat), and the foundation of movements, and the cause of every cause. There is no secret after it, and none knows what it is except Him. And it must be known, O Mufaddal, that the Anza'i Form which said: 'My exoteric is Imamate and legateship (wasiyyah), and my esoteric is an impenetrable unseen that is not perceived,' is not the totality of the Creator, nor is the Creator other than it. It is Him in affirmation, origination, witnessing, and certainty; it is not Him as a whole, nor in gathering, nor in enumeration, nor in encompassment."
