[260] And from it, from Ibn Abbas that he said: The Messenger - majestic is his praise - was in the mosque and with him was a group of the Emigrants (Muhajirin) and the Helpers (Ansar), when Gabriel entered upon him and said to him: "O Muhammad, the Truth sends you peace and says to you: 'Bring Ali and place your face opposite his face.'" Then Gabriel ascended to the heaven. So the Messenger of Allah called Ali, so he brought him and placed his face opposite his face. Then Gabriel descended a second time, and with him was a plate in which were fresh dates, and he placed it between them, then he said: "Eat, both of you."

So they ate. Then he brought a basin or a pitcher and said: "O Messenger of Allah, Allah has commanded you to pour the water over the hand of Ali bin Abi Talib." And he stood to pour the water over the hands of Ali, so Ali said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am more entitled to pour the water." He said: "But Allah, Glorified be He, has commanded me instead of you." And whenever he poured the water over the hand of Ali, not a single drop of it fell into the basin! So Ali said: "O Messenger of Allah, I did not see any of the water falling into the basin?" So he said: "O Ali, indeed the angels race each other for the water." And exactly confirming it. His, the Almighty's, saying: ["They want to extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah will perfect His light, although the disbelievers dislike it"] ¹ .
