So he said: "Increase me." So he said: "Far be it (Hayhat), if I informed you of the essence of that, you would have risen from me while you say 'Ja'far bin Muhammad is a liar in his saying, or a madman'." 1

And how can other than the righteous look into the secrets? From this speech of our Master Ja'far, we understand that there is an esoteric (batin) that is not uncovered except for its people, and that the Commander of the Faithful is a deity (ilah) whose recognition is not permissible to be imparted except to its deserver among the possessors of visions and insights.

[243] And from it: By his chain of transmission from al-Sadiq - exalted is his might - concerning the Almighty's saying: "Indeed, upon Us is the guidance", that he - exalted is his might - read the verse "Indeed, Ali is the guidance * And indeed, to him belong the Hereafter and the first", and that is where he is asked about the Quran, for indeed in it are wonders, like his saying: "And Allah sufficed the believers in fighting by Ali", and "Indeed, Ali is the guidance * And indeed, to him belong the Hereafter and the first".

[244] And from it: Indeed al-Sadiq - exalted is his might - was asked about the meaning of "Hasten to the best of work" (Hayya ala khayr al-amal), so he said: "Working by the authority (wilayah)."

Footnotes

1Rarely is a possessor of knowledge found who understands the indication of al-Sadiq - exalted is his might - to the divinity of the Commander of the Faithful - majestic is his praise - when the questioner asks about the reason for the Prophet - exalted is his might - raising the Commander upon his shoulders, so al-Sadiq answers him indicating to his Imamate, then he conceals the secret by his saying: "Far be it! If I informed you, you would have stood up from me, and you would accuse me: either as a liar, or a madman." So what station is above the Imamate except divinity? And what thing other than it induces a man to say concerning the Imam of his time this great saying? Then reflect: his indication to "the liar" is nothing but an allusion to the saying of the Truth: "The heart did not lie [about] what it saw," and his indication to "the madman" is an allusion to His saying: "And your companion is not a madman, and he had already seen him in the clear horizon." And this connects to what passed by us from the narrations of the Ascension (Mi'raj) and the seeing of the Messenger - exalted is his might - of the Commander of the Faithful. Is not the speech of al-Sadiq another indication to the hadith of "the difficult, the deemed difficult" (al-sa'b al-mustas'ab)? It was narrated that the Commander of the Faithful - exalted is his might - was sitting in the mosque among a group of his companions, so they said: "Speak to us." So he said: "Woe unto you! My speech is difficult, deemed difficult, none comprehends it except the knowers." But they persisted, so he entered the house and said: "I am the one who ascended so I conquered, and I am the one who gives life and causes death, I am the First and the Last and the Exoteric and the Esoteric." So it was not from them except that they said: "He disbelieved!" and they stood up. So he commanded the door, so it held fast, then he said: "Did I not tell you? Come, I will explain: my saying: 'I ascended so I conquered' means with this sword I conquered you until you believed in Allah, and my saying: 'I give life and cause death' is giving life to the Sunnah and causing death to the innovation (bid'ah), and my saying: 'the First' is the first who believed and submitted, and 'the Last' is the last who shrouded the Prophet and buried him, and 'the Exoteric and the Esoteric', with me is their knowledge." So they said: "You relieved us, may Allah relieve you." Source: Al-Ikhtisas by al-Mufid. So it is the speech exactly, and the difficult, the deemed difficult, which does not increase the foolish ones except in declaring disbelief (takfir), even of their Imams. And in this clarification is the core of guidance for whoever desires the truth and right conduct.
