The Third Verse: [“Have you not considered those who were forbidden from private conversation, then they return to that which they were forbidden and converse privately about sin and aggression and disobedience to the Messenger? And when they come to you, they greet you with a greeting that Allah does not greet you with and say among themselves,
'Why does Allah not punish us for what we say?' Sufficient for them is Hell, which they will [enter to] burn, and wretched is the destination.”] 1
This is an allusion to those wicked disbelievers, specifically the Jews among them, who would greet the Messenger and confront him in a manner contrary to the excellence [of greeting] with which our Master, the Commander of the Faithful, would confront him the greeting and beautiful encounter and great appreciation. May Allah forsake them, for when they would greet the Messenger, they would hasten to say to him, "As-samu 'alayk" (Death be upon you) instead of "As-salamu 'alayk" (Peace be upon you), and as-sam means death.
