'Then he approached and descended. And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer.'1

He (exalted be his might) said: "Allah the Exalted brought Muhammad (exalted be his might) near to Him, so there was nothing between Him and him except a pearl cage, in which there was a bed of gold, shimmering. He saw a figure, and it was said to him, 'O Muhammad, do you recognize this figure?' He said, 'Yes, this is the figure of Ali, my Lord and my God.' Then Allah the Exalted revealed to him: 'Marry him to Fatima, and take him as your successor [Muhammad] his Prophet (exalted be his might). So there was nothing between Him and him except a cage of pearl, in which there was a shimmering bed of gold. He saw a figure, and it was said: "O Muhammad, do you recognize this figure?" He said: "Yes, this is the figure of Ali bin Abi Talib." Thus, it becomes clear to us that the light of the abstract Divinity (al-Lahut al-mujarrad) cannot be seen except through a form.

The Second Verse: From Surah An-Najm

[“And that He destroyed the first [people of] ‘Aad.” ]2

[134] Our Master, the Commander of the Faithful (exalted be his might), said in one of his sermons:

Footnotes

1(1) Surah An-Najm – Verses 8-9.Our Master the Messenger (exalted be his might) said: "When I was ascended to the fourth heaven, I found Ali sitting on the throne of dignity (kursi al-karama), with the angels surrounding him, magnifying him, worshipping him, praising him, and sanctifying him." (Source: Sara'ir wa Asrar al-Nutaba' - Esoteric Ismaili). This is what the Prophet heard in the highest heavens as a praise to the name of the "Most High Ali" (al-'Ali al-A'la). This narration is an explicit disclosure of what the Master Muhammad (majestic is His praise) heard and saw. He saw nothing on the night of the Mi'raj (Ascension) except our Master the Commander of the Faithful (majestic is His praise). The Messenger (exalted be his might) said: "I did not reach anything on the night of the Mi'raj, nor did I see it, except that Ali bin Abi Talib had already reached it." (Source: Tali' al-Anwar - Exoteric Shia).Regarding the incident of breaking the idols atop the Kaaba, when our Master the Commander of the Faithful climbed upon the Messenger, the Messenger recalled a manifestation he witnessed on the night of the Mi'raj. The Messenger (exalted be his might) said: "When I was ascended to the heaven, my sense of smell reached a fragrance at the distance of two bow lengths that I had not smelled before, until Ali placed his feet upon my shoulders; then I realized and smelled that same fragrance from the feet of Ali (majestic is His praise)." (Source: Tali' al-Anwar - Exoteric Shia).A poet composed verses regarding this: “They said: 'Praise the Commander of the Bees (Ali).' I said to them: 'My praise and the praise of all mankind is but a part of his inner meaning. What can I say about one whose foot was placed in a position where the All-Merciful placed His right hand?'”—the position where the All-Merciful placed His right hand when he placed it upon the shoulder of the Messenger, whereupon he learned what is in the heavens and the earth. From Abd al-Rahman bin Qurt: When the Messenger (exalted be his might) was taken by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque, and returned to be between Zamzam and the Station [of Abraham], with Gabriel on his right and Michael on his left, he flew... he said: "I heard praising in the highest heavens... they praised the Possessor of Majesty, compassionate toward the Possessor of Loftiness, for what He has exalted: 'Glory to the Most High, the Supreme' (Subhan al-'Ali al-A'la)." (Source: Ma'rifat al-Sahaba by Abu Nu'aym - Exoteric Umari). Our Master the Commander of the Faithful (exalted be his might) said: "And my name in the fourth heaven is 'The Possessor of Loftiness' (Dhu al-'Ula)." (Source: Sahifat al-Abrar - Exoteric Shia). Here, the Prophet (exalted be his might) said that when he went to the highest heavens, he heard the praising of the name al-'Ali al-A'la, and the Master, the Commander of the Faithful (exalted be his might), said that his name in the fourth heaven is Dhu al-'Ula.
