[126] From the treatise Al-Jawhara al-Taliqaniyya by Sayyid Abu al-Tahir Sabur—may Allah sanctify him—quoting from the books of the Shia, naturally, from Abu Dharr, who said: The companions of the Prophet asked him and said "O Messenger of Allah, we wish for the revival of a dead person so that we may have clear insight into our religion." He—Exalted is His might—said: "Rise, O Ali, and revive a dead person for them." They said: "We wish for the revival of Sa'd bin Mas'adah al-Ansari,"—who was nearby, having died seven years prior.
The Commander of the Faithful rose, and we went until he reached the man's grave. He cast his cloak upon it and spoke words in a low voice. No sooner had he finished speaking than the grave split open, and Sa'd emerged in his [original] form—we did not fail to recognize a single thing about him—and he said: "This is the Wali (Guardian/Saint) of the Messenger of Allah, who caused me to die and brought me to life, and he is competent over all things. Your pardon for your servant, O my Master, for You are the Pardoning, the Forgiving," signaling toward the Commander of the Faithful—Exalted is His might.
The people then said: "We adjure you by Allah to return this man [to his state], for if people see him, they will go astray from the religion and say about you what the Christians said about the Messiah, and they will take you as a Lord and a God." So he [Ali] said to him: "Return to the state you were in." He returned, the grave closed, and the people began to argue, some believing and others attributing it to sorcery.
