and appreciation by the Shiites and the people of the Sunnah, then is it conceivable or permissible that the immaculate Imams would respect them despite what they are upon of deviation and perversion? Not at all, for indeed the like of this does not occur, and the Imams of the pure House do not appreciate whoever was corrupt of belief, bad of school of thought, but rather on the contrary, they fight innovations and misguidances, and the blame of a blamer does not take them concerning AllahAlso, is it conceivable that those persons—of the likes of Ibn Saba and his companions, and some of the people of Sabat1 —

would come and declare openly the divinity of our master, the Commander of the Faithful, within his hearing and in his presence, without their being upon a certain knowledge of a divinity, and without what occurred from them happening with acceptance from him?

And that his denunciation against them for that and his burning of them with fire was a concealment from him upon the people of The Exoteric (Al-Zahir) and a plot from him toward them? He, the Exalted, said:[“And they plotted, and Allah plotted, and Allah is the best of plotters.”] 2 , and he burned them as a reward for their announcement of his lordship and his naming as we mentioned, but his burning of that was coolness and peace upon them, and the evidence for their faith and the soundness of their belief is his giving of life to them after the burning and their return to their homes in the best attire.

1On the authority of Abu al-Ahwas, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ammar al-Sabati, he said: The Commander of the Faithful—His might was mighty—arrived at al-Mada'in, so he settled in the Iwan of Kisra, and Dhalfu ibn Munajjim Kisra was with him. When the decline of the sun became shaded, he said to Dhalf: Stand with me, and a group of the people of Sabat was with him. He did not cease circumambulating the dwellings of Kisra and saying to Dhalf: This place belonged to Kisra for such and such, so he would say: Yes, by Allah, likewise. He did not cease upon that until he circumambulated the places with all who were with him, and Dhalf was saying: O my master and my lord, it is as if you placed the things in these places. Then he—His might was mighty—looked at a decayed skull and said to some of his companions: Take this skull, and it was cast away. And he—His might was mighty—came to the Iwan and sat in it and called for a basin and poured water into it and said to him: Leave this skull in the basin. Then he—His might was mighty—said: I adjure you, O skull, inform me who am I and who are you? So the skull spoke with an eloquent tongue and said: As for you, you are the Commander of the Faithful, the master of the trustees, and the Imam of the righteous in The Exoteric (Al-Zahir) and The Esoteric (Al-Batin), and greater than to be described; and as for me, I am the servant of Allah and the son of the maidservant of Allah, Kisra Anushirwan. So the people who were with him of the people of Sabat departed to their families and informed them of what was and of what they heard from the skull, so they were agitated and differed in the meaning of the Commander of the Faithful—His might was mighty—and they attended him, and some of them said: These have corrupted our hearts by what they informed from you, and some of them said concerning him—His might was mighty—the like of what the Christians said concerning the Messiah, and the like of what Abdullah bin Saba and his companions said, so if you leave them upon this, the people will disbelieve. When he heard that from them, he said to them: What do you love that I do with them? They said: You burn them with fire just as you burned Abdullah bin Saba and his companions. So bring them. He said: What carried you upon what you said? They said: We heard the speech of the decayed skull and its addressing you, and that is not permissible except for Allah the Exalted, so from that we said what we said. So he—His might was mighty—said: Return from your speech and repent to Allah. They said: We were not returning from our saying, so do with us what you are doing. So he—His might was mighty—ordered that the fire be kindled for them, so he burned them. When they were burned, he said: Crush them and scatter them in the wind. So they crushed them and scattered them in the wind. When it was the third day from their burning, the people of Sabat entered to him and said: Allah, Allah concerning the religion of Muhammad, indeed those whom you burned with fire have returned to their homes in the best of what they were. So he—His might was mighty—said: Is it not that you burned them with fire, crushed them, and scattered them in the wind? They said: Yes. He—His might was mighty—said: I burned them, by Allah, and I gave life to them. So the people of Sabat departed bewildered, and the like of what Abdullah bin Saba and his companions said (so He punishes them) what Abdullah bin Saba and his companions did, and his matter ended to what the matter of Abdullah bin Saba and his companions had ended to, and to what he informed about.
