Salman said: ‘So I followed him, sandal stepping exactly in the footprint of sandal, for seventeen steps. Then I witnessed the army, and the Imam let out a cry that caused both armies to blaze [in shock] and scatter. And Gabriel descended upon the Messenger of Allah—His might was mighty—and greeted him with peace, so he returned his greeting and rejoiced at his arrival. Then the Imam turned upon the brave warriors, and the host was defeated and turned their backs in flight. And Allah repelled those who disbelieved, in their rage, not having obtained any good. And Allah sufficed the believers in battle through Ali bin Abi Talib, by his formidable power and his resolve.
And Allah—Mighty and Majestic—made manifest his miracle in these places, while the entire nation had been incapable of it. And He revealed his dazzling excellence in his coming from Medina—may Allah honor it—in seventeen steps, and his hearing the call of the Prophet—His might was mighty—despite the vast distance, and his answering him. And these are the greatest of miracles and the foremost of signs demonstrating the absolute non-existence of any equal to him.’” End quote.
