For the Messenger—His might was mighty—had sent the first to deliver it, and after his departure, and upon the revelation of the verse, he sent our master, the Commander of the Faithful—sublime is his remembrance. So he took it from him and delivered it to the polytheists. That phenomenon—meaning the removal of the first from the delivery of Bara'ah—was only to demonstrate his incapacity and deficiency, and that it is not valid for the delivery to be from anyone except from Allah and His Messenger.

Thus, the saying of the Exalted in the verse “from Allah” is an allusion to our master undertaking the delivery of Bara'ah to the polytheists by himself directly. And His saying, Glory be to Him, “and His Messenger” is an allusion to manifesting the sending of the Commander of the Faithful to deliver Bara'ah by the Messenger—His might was mighty. In another, clearer expression: “from Allah” is our master—sublime is his remembrance—undertaking the delivery of Bara'ah inwardly (batinan), and “and His Messenger” is his being sent with it by the Messenger outwardly (zahiran).
