The Commander of the Faithful—sublime is his remembrance—called out to him and said: “O Jew, for how much did you buy your father and your mother from the Children of Israel?”
The Jew let out a great cry and said: “Do you not hear the speech of Ali bin Abi Talib, claiming that he knows the unseen, and that I bought my father and my mother from the Children of Israel?” So a great crowd of people gathered around him, having heard the speech of the Commander of the Faithful and the speech of the Jew.
It is as if I am looking at the Commander of the Faithful as he spoke with words I did not understand. He then turned to one of the two fish and said: “I adjure you to speak; who am I and who are you?” The fish spoke with an eloquent tongue and said: “You are the Commander of the Faithful, Ali bin Abi Talib.” And it said to me [the Jew]: “O so-and-so, I am your father, so-and-so the son of so-and-so; I died in such-and-such year, and I left for you such-and-such wealth, and the mark on your hand is such-and-such.” Then he turned to the other [fish] and said to it: “I adjure you to speak; who am I and who are you?”
