This is Muhammad, the most exalted of Allah's creations entirely, by the consensus of all Muslim sects; the Creator requests of him to negate from himself the knowledge of the unseen, because it belongs to Allah and is restricted solely to Him. And yet here is our master, the Commander of the Faithful—His might was mighty—speaking of the unseen and explicitly declaring his knowledge and his encompassing of it in many of his sermons, which I shall bring forth in its proper place, God willing. So much so that the exoteric poets began to sing in their odes of his knowledge regarding matters of the unseen, and I will come to mention that in its place as well.
The Third Verse: From Surah Al-An'am: [“And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darknesses of the earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that it is [written] in a clear record.”] 1
Regarding this verse as well, I shall postpone the discussion around it like the one before it, and I will confine myself here to the following account.
[62] It was reported in the book Uyun al-Mu'jizat with the following text: Ja'far bin Muhammad al-Bajali narrated, saying: Ali bin Umar al-Saqil narrated to me, saying: Ibn Nuhah narrated to me from his father, from his grandfather, from al-Harith bin Abdullah al-Hamdani—may Allah be pleased with him—who said:
We were with the Commander of the Faithful—His might was mighty—one day at the gate of Al-Rahbah where the Commander of the Faithful—His might was mighty—used to stay, conversing, when a Jew from Al-Hirah passed by us, and with him were two fish.
