The substance of these two verses carries the same meaning as the substance of the verse:
“And whoever denies the faith”—meaning Ali—“his work has become worthless,” meaning Allah has made his deeds void. The commentators of the Qur'an have explained the phrase “He will waste their deeds” (adalla a'malahum) as “He made them worthless” (ahbataha).
[The Second Verse: “Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment.”] 1
Within the folds of this sacred divine saying is an allusion to those who directly engaged in waging war against our master, the Commander of the Faithful—sublime is his remembrance—during the era of the Messenger of Allah—His might was mighty—and after him.
