The battlefields of Uhud, Badr, Khaybar, Al-Khandaq (The Trench), and others are all witnesses to that. In the encounter of Khaybar, when the first and the second retreated with the Islamic banner before Marhab the Jew, the Messenger—His might was mighty—said: “Tomorrow I shall certainly give the banner to a man through whose hands Allah will grant victory; a relentless attacker who never flees,” and in another narration: “He loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him.” Thus, the banner was placed in the hand of the Commander of the Faithful—His might was mighty—and he slew Marhab al-Amiri and conquered the fortress after ripping off the gate, which forty men used to be incapable of closing.
