And from his saying in one of these books, which is the book Yanabi' al-Mawaddah: “And indeed, I am the sustainer over every sustainer, encompassing all the worlds, all-knowing.” This is an account he brought forth from the book Sharh al-Qasa'id al-Alawiyyat al-Sab' (Commentary on the Seven Alawite Odes) composed by Ibn Abi al-Hadid and commented upon by Sheikh Muhammad, the author of Al-Madarik. It is said that the Commander of the Faithful was in his assembly with some of the Muslims, among whom was Amr bin Hurayth, when a woman entered addressing the Commander of the Faithful with her saying: “O you who killed the men, orphaned the children, and widowed the women!” Thereupon, the Commander of the Faithful said to her:

“And indeed, she is the loud, insolent, bold, and shameless woman, and she possesses the pelvis of men and is intersex (unthahu, meaning a hermaphrodite).” So she turned back and left.

Amr bin Hurayth followed her and said to her: “What I heard from you concerning this man delighted me.” Then he brought her into his house and ordered some of his maidservants to remove her garments and uncover her condition so that he could ascertain the truth of what he had heard from the Commander of the Faithful. She sought protection from him, saying: “Yes, the matter is exactly as he said; she possesses the pelvis of men and is intersex,” meaning that she possesses what men have and what women have, penetrating and being penetrated....
