And among them is: “And know that Allah knows what is within yourselves, so beware of Him.” The possessor of insight who is acquainted with the grandeur of reality knows that our master—His might was mighty—used to know what was within the souls, and he frequently exposed it on certain occasions. Let me present an account reported in the book Irshad al-Qulub by Sheikh al-Daylami, which includes: One night, he—meaning our master, His might was mighty—went out from the Mosque of Kufa heading toward his house, and a quarter of the night had passed. With him was Kumayl bin Ziyad, who was among the best of his Shia and lovers. On the way, he reached the door of a man who was reciting the Quran at that time, reading the saying of the Exalted:[“Is one who is devoutly obedient during periods of the night, prostrating and standing [in prayer], fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord, [like one who does not]? Say, ‘Are those who know equal to those who do not know?’ Only they will remember who are people of understanding.”] 1 , in a melodious, sorrowful voice.
