And the gist of the matter is that we proceed in our belief, our knowledge, and our ultimate reality in accordance with what was stated by the luminary of the monotheists and the philosopher of the verifiers, Al-Makzun al-Sinjari—may Allah sanctify him—by his saying: “And knowledge of Him is not correct except through His Essence, and His Essence is not known except through His vision, and His vision is not possible except through His manifestation, and His manifestation is not perceived in its completion, because manifestation occurs according to the strength of the one looking toward it.”
Its meaning is the lifting of the veil—the veil of darkness—from the eyesight of the seer so that he may witness of the Essence of the Manifesting One in accordance with his capacity, within the boundary of his incapacity and the weariness of his eyesight from witnessing the light of divinity (lahut), without any change occurring in the Essence of the Manifesting One by a movement that would necessitate locomotion for Him away from His state of immanence (butun); rather, He was witnessed as such by virtue of the fluctuation of hearts and eyesights.
