THE REFUTATION AGAINST WHOEVER ANTHROPOMORPHIZED THE ORIGINATOR INTO A FORM
Then let us return to what transpired between myself and my adversary Rabi‘ah, and what [my statement] 1 was to him: "I have not established a form except when I saw that they had anthropomorphized the Meaning (al-Ma‘na)."
Rabi‘ah ibn Nasr al-‘Asidah said: "Whoever does not establish the form has disbelieved," and he spoke extensively on that matter. So I said to him: "What is it that you establish, and what is it that you negate?"
He replied: "I establish the form, and I negate from it eating, drinking, defecation, and ritual impurity."
I said to him: "You negate these from him, yet you establish upon him the limbs of a human and physical configuration?"
He said: "Yes, I say: indeed, He is a form with a hand of light, a head of light, a leg of light, and a tongue of light. He is exactly as we saw him, having extended his hand toward the sky."
