The proof of what we mentioned first is his saying, peace be upon him: "O He from whom appeared that which unto Him returns, and from whom emanated that which within Him sets."

It is firmly established that the Originator, glory be to Him and exalted is He, was and nothing was with Him, and that He originated the Name; He did not originate it from nonexistence ('adam), nor from a pre-existing thing. There was nothing before the existence of the Light except the Essence. Therefore, if we say that it is from other than 1 the Essence, it would necessarily have to be from a thing, and that thing from another thing, falling into an infinite regress (al-tasalsul). Thus, nothing remains except that it must be from the Essence.

This is according to the saying of our master Muhammad, His glory is magnificent: "I am from Ali and Ali is from me."

And his saying, His glory is magnificent: "I am Ali and Ali is I."

And his saying, His glory is magnificent: "Ali and I are like these two—I do not say right and left,"

Footnotes

1There is an addition in some manuscripts: "other than the Light of" (ghayri nuri al-dhat instead of ghayri al-dhat).
