rather, he meant by it that he is a receptive entity serving an actor that is never acted upon. He is brought into being (mukawwan), and the Originator, the Exalted, is His bringer into being, [while he is the bringer of the worlds into being] 1 .

For this reason, we said: he is a receptive actor proceeding from an actor that is never acted upon. As for his saying, peace be upon him: ["O All, O Pre-eternal"] 2 , he alluded by that to the Essence, the Light, the Radiance, and the Shadow.

Since the allusion to "the All" (al-Kull) can only be made to a totality, not to a single thing. And his saying, peace be upon him: "O Pre-eternal" (Ya Azal), its meaning is: O He who has never ceased to be as He is, in Essence and Light. The Light is the Light of the Essence, the Radiance, and the Shadow—which is the Name, and the reality of (Alif, Sin, Mim [A-S-M]) is a Shadow, a Radiance, and a Light.
