As for that which the fleshy, bloody eye witnessed, it is not a form, nor a veil, nor is it a body that the Meaning wears, nor is it something to be touched by a hand, nor does it have a visible shadow like the shadow of humanity, nor is it a person walking upon the earth and shaded by the sky; rather, He is a cause ('illah) for the people of blind to [true] gnosis and the denying understandings, the veil of spiritual arrest (ḥijāb al-waqfa) — the veil of standstill that has imprisoned you, O Sheikh, within the human temples (al-hayākil), and He is a cause that made you see the Creator eating and drinking— Exalted and Sanctified (taʿālā wa-taqaddasa) is He above all that.

And the Sheikh, may God sanctify his soul, said: "There will come after us peoples who claim that they are believers yet they lie, and they read their canons mockingly, ridiculing one another, declaring one another disbelievers, and splitting into [sects] 1 , and God is ever watchful over them. A faction among them claimed: that the visible form is a sublime veil that He established, and from which a fortified unseen spoke; yet every visible form is created."
