As for the exposition of the letters: Know, may God have mercy upon you, that silence precedes utterance, and stillness precedes motion. Silence and stillness are the description of the Pre-existent, the Eternal, whereas utterance and motion are [the description of] 1 the eternal, everlasting entity that is pre-existent alongside the Eternal. This is the eternal Word of the Meaning, majestic is His glory, from which all other words emerged, and it is the beginning of all motions, just as He, Mighty and Majestic, stated: "The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of God and His Word which He directed to Mary and a soul from Him." 2 And He stated: "And Mary, the daughter of 'Imran, who guarded her chastity, so We blew into it through Our angel, and she believed in the words of her Lord and His scriptures and was of the devoutly obedient." 3 As for the words [or: the Word] 4 , they are the joining of the letters [A, B, T, Th], and they are originated (muhdathah); thus, every name and speech across all languages consists of letters, both separated and connected.
