A believer's faith does not attain completion until he recognizes twelve [letters] 1 that have been obligated upon him; when he acts according to them, he is a true believer.

The first of these is the recognition of the Meaning, the Exalted: that He is Singular, Eternal, Solitary, Absolute, a Pre-existent Essence standing by Himself, who neither begets nor is born, and there is none co-equal unto Him. He has no partner in His kingdom, making manifest His power and His volition among His creation for the establishment of His command and His prohibition, the consolidation of His authority, and the clarification of His proof. For He caused spatiality to be spatial, and locality to be local, [and He is] 2 without space [or locality]3 . [Attributes originate from Him, yet He is transcended above them] 4 ; there is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing, the Sublime, the Supreme."
