God is his judge for the malice of [his deed] 1 , for this man has been entirely severed from the Essence of the Path (jawhar al-sabil), and the enticing self (al-nafs al-musawwilah) grew dominant within him, exactly as Hatim al-Tubani, may God sanctify him, stated: "Indeed, it is the spiritual soul (al-ruh al-ruhaniyyah) that never sleeps and never enters into forbidden matters. The proof of this is that whenever a human being intends to commit an ugly deed, there appears from within himself an commander [and a forbidder] 2 . The commander of corruption is the enticing self, whereas the forbidder is the spiritual soul. It belongs to the Essence of the Path, attributed to intellect and faith. Thus, if he persists in committing the detestable act, the soul of intellect and faith departs from him, [and the enticing] 3 and evil-commanding soul becomes firmly established. Then, once he has committed the [ugly deeds] 4 , the spiritual soul returns to him to show him the wretchedness of what he has wrought, and remorse overcomes him."
