That limitation resides within them, not within Him, for each beholds Him through what matches its own genus. [How then can that which is of the genus of His creation be conjoined with Him]1?

[26]A questioner once asked our master al-Sadiq, His glory is magnificent, concerning Oneness (al-Tawhid)? He replied: "Indeed, the Manifest Light, the One, the Singular, the Pre-eternal, has never ceased to be One with no thing [with Him] 2 ; Singular with no second with Him; Known, not unknown; Decisive (muhkam), not ambiguous (mutashabih); Remembered, not forgotten. The name of any thing among all things does not apply to Him. He is Self-subsisting, an Unseen hidden from all else; not from a time did He exist, nor to a time will He be; nor upon a thing did He depend, nor upon a thing does He depend; nor within a thing did He [dwell] 3 , nor .upon a thing did He [settle] 4 .
