This was legislated toward it only to manifest the Transfiguration from it and the radiance of the Lord’s light from its direction; for this reason, it was called the "House of God," because He manifested the Birth within it—Exalted is He who is not encompassed by thoughts, nor changed by times and ages. It is an indication of the Greatest Veil (al-ḥijāb al-a‘ẓam), and the meaning of that will come in the section on Pilgrimage (al-Ḥajj). As for the manner of turning toward it outwardly, it is the cessation of the prayer-performer’s face from turning toward any direction other than it, from the beginning of the prayer until the exit from it.

The meaning of this according to the people of the esoteric (ahl al-bāṭin) is the turning of the prayer-performer’s face in reality—he being the one who knows his prayer, which is the pure investigation into the divine sciences and hidden secrets—toward the direction of the Intellect (al-‘Aql), which is the esoteric reality of the House situated in Bakkah, and standing by what He commanded, and submitting to Him. The Gate (al-Bāb) is the attribute of Knowledge (ṣifat al-‘ilm), as we have previously mentioned.
