The Fingers of the Left Hand: These indicate: Abdullah ibn Rawahah, Uthman ibn Maz'un, Qanbar ibn Kadan, and the Two Protégés (al-Waliyan).
Washing to the Elbows
Washing them to the elbows signifies the knowledge of the Connection of the Twelve Commanders (al-Nuqabā’) to the Orphans (al-Aytām). They include:
Abu al-Haytham Malik ibn al-Tayyihan al-Ashhali , al-Bara' ibn Ma'rur al-Ansari , al-Mundhir ibn 'Umar ibn Kinas al-Sa'idi , Rafi' ibn Malik ibn al-'Ajlan al-Ansari , Asad ibn Asad ibn al-Husayn al-Ashhali al-Ansari , al-Abbas ibn 'Ubada, 'Ubada ibn al-Samit al-Nawfali al-Khazraji al-Ansari, Abdullah ibn 'Umar ibn Haram, Salim ibn 'Umayr al-Khazraji, Ubayy ibn Ka'b, Rafi' ibn Warqa' al-Riyahi, and Bilal ibn Rabah al-Shanawi.
These are the names of the Commanders (Nuqabā’) of the Lord of the Worlds. They are living and do not die, wealthy and never in need; they do not inhabit physical bodies, nor do they taste pain. Through their gnosis, souls are purified and connected to the Holy World.
