For that reason, it was impossible for them to be equal in their vision of the Face of the Truth. However, the perspectives return to principles (uṣūl) of which we can mention some in a universal manner, by way of indication and guidance. Even if these [perspectives] are contrary to the Truth, a thing is made manifest by its opposite. This is so that the weak believer may not find them confusing; for our purpose in mentioning them is to clarify the Truth by demonstrating their falsehood, so that the Truth may then be known with a verified gnosis, stripped of falsehood, and so that a distinction may be made between the two.
And that is because among the people are those who said: "I knew the Truth through the incapacity to know Him."
Thus, he contented himself with his incapacity rather than the gnosis of the Truth; and that is the path of the Bewildered (al-Ḥā’irīn).
Among them are those who said: "I knew Him through His manufactured things and the traces of His craftsmanship." And that is the station of the Severed (al-Munqaṭi‘īn).
Among them are those who said: "I knew Him through His descriptions (awṣāf)."
