A Warning (Tanbih): The spiritual stations (al-manazil), by definition, are never truly attained except by the realized people of arrival (ahl al-wusul), the people of divine care. As for charismatic marvels (al-karamat), insofar as they are true charisms, they belong exclusively to them; but insofar as they are merely the breaking of natural habits (kharq 'awa'id), they may also be experienced by one who is being subtly enticed to his ruin (al-mamkur bihi) or led step-by-step to destruction (al-mustadraj) via an "active modality." An example of this is when a man commits adultery, steals, or performs a forbidden act, and then enters upon a master of mystical disclosure (al-mukashaf); the master sees a dark, black tracing over the specific bodily limb from which the act originated, seeing nothing else but that. This is the precise nature of disclosure granted to the verifiers within the station of scrupulous piety (al-wara').
The resting place of the spirit (al-ruh) is a point of blood in the center of the heart, while the resting place of the heart is within the pathways of the brain. The spirit is bound to the soul (al-nafs); thus, when a human being sleeps, his spirit extends outward like the rays of the sun, seeing through the light and illumination of Allah, the Exalted.
