when he dies, remains imprisoned within them forever after death. He takes the form of an unquenchable thirst: whenever he thirsts, he drinks, and whenever he drinks, his thirst intensifies—thus remaining in his prison for all eternity, perpetually.
A Warning (Tanbih): Know that Satan (al-Shaytan) is a name derived from shata yashutu shawtan, meaning to traverse the earth with great speed, which denotes swiftness of travel; he roams through the earth and wanders aimlessly in every valley. Thoughts (al-khawatir) are of two kinds: lofty, which belongs to the celestial realm (al-malakut) and is divided into categories that stand in the position of angels; and lowly, which is the earthly element that was cast down from Paradise to the earth. The meaning of Paradise (al-jannah) is derived from concealment (al-istitar) due to its subtlety and spirituality, whereas the meaning of Earth (al-ard) signifies physical, material realities and everything attached to them. Thus, whatever thought is lofty is spiritual and celestial, originating from Paradise; and whatever thought is lowly is material and satanic, originating from the Fire. O heedless one!
