The Method of the Seekers (Minhaj al-Raghibin): Remembrance (al-dhikr), in its true reality, is the repetition of the name of the Remembered One by the heart and the tongue, then by the spirit, then by the intellect, then by the secret (al-sirr). The sustenance of the outward dimension is through the movement of physical bodies, the sustenance of the inward dimension is through the movement of hearts, the sustenance of the secrets is through silence, and the sustenance of the intellects is through annihilation (al-fana') from silence, until the servant is completely at rest with Allah.

The will of the servant is an acquisition, so it is "what it has earned,"

And over their hearts, the Creator has taken hold.

For by the will, the servant went about overturning, Coursing toward a paradise, or else toward a fire.

The measure of every individual is the discourse of his heart; so let the wayfarer (al-salik) be cautious and take heed, for the part is contained within the whole, and it does not reverse.
