the souls are turned by the gravity of the Divine subduing (al-qahr al-ilahi) toward conducting themselves in their desires, and everyone is given the reward of his excellence from the gender of his action, and likewise the evildoer is recompensed for what his hands have earned.
Epictetus: Verily, the soul of the human is a branch from Allah. And the opinion among the early Stoics is that the soul of the human is from Allah, for it is from the single, Divine Soul; and that the soul is the warm breath (pneuma) that sustains the body and forms it, and it is conceivable that it is affected by the illnesses of the body and its wounds, and likewise the body is also affected by the soul since it turns red in shyness and turns yellow in dread. As for the soul, it connects with the body and separates from it; therefore, it is a body.
Ibn Miskawayh: The soul is a substance, not a body, and it is another thing separate from the body, and this is the intellect. And the proof for that is that the soul does not transform nor change, unlike the body, its parts, and its accidents. And the human is a tablet in which the celestial soul breathes, as well as what is beneath it and what is above it.
