Know that the side of the Heart facing the Spirit (al-Ruh) is a locus illuminated by the light of the Spirit, and it is called the Intellect (al-'Aql); it is the inner prompting toward goodness and the pathway for angelic inspiration. Conversely, the side of the Heart facing the lower soul (al-Nafs) is darkened by the obscurity of its base attributes, and it is called the Breast (al-Sadr); it is the staging ground for satanic whispering (waswasat al-shaytan).

When the Holy Spirit is breathed into a human being, they join with Absolute Existence (al-Wujud al-Mutlaq) in a spiritual, sacred union, which constitutes their share of divinity. Thus, it is established with us that man possesses two copies: an outward copy and an inward copy. His outward copy corresponds to the universe in its entirety, while his inward copy corresponds to the Divine Presence (al-Hadrah al-Ilahiyyah).

Man is the absolute macrocosm in true reality, since he alone is receptive to all existents—both the eternal (qadim) and the originated (hadith). No other existent besides him possesses this capacity; for no individual part of the cosmos can receive Divinity, nor does the Divine take on servitude.
