Therefore, if you reflect, my brother, upon what we have described and verify what we have mentioned, you will be prepared to take on the angelic form (al-surah al-malakiyyah). You will have acquired human virtue, freed yourself from the animal form and bestial traits, and become an inhabitant of heaven by virtue of your pure spirit and luminous soul. Thus, your form will become essentially psychical, your spirit holy and intellective, and your matter divine.
Know that this cannot be achieved through knowledge without action, nor through speech without deeds, just as it is impossible for you to exist in this world merely by your soul and the subtlety of your spirit without your physical body and the intermediate links that connect existents to you. Know that action is the ladder of ascension (sullam al-mi'raj), and knowledge is the light that runs before you; by the ladder you ascend, and by the light you are guided.
Muhyi al-Din (Ibn 'Arabi):
“And remember the name of your Lord”—which is your true inner self. That is to say: know your soul, remember it, and do not forget it, lest Allah cause you to forget yourself. Strive to attain its perfections after discovering its true reality.
