nor can it know the true realities of existence except by gazing toward the Intellect.

The Soul is only able to gaze toward the Intellect with the eye of insight ('ayn al-basirah) once it is opened; and the eye of insight only opens for it when it awakens from the slumber of heedlessness.

Know that this sensitive faculty (al-quwwah al-hassasah) is not a composite part of the Soul, just as the senses themselves are each a physical limb and part of the body. Rather, in each function, it is the Soul itself. These different names are only attributed to it due to the diversity of its functional actions: when it executes vision, it is called the visual (al-basirah); when it executes hearing, it is called the auditory (al-sami'ah); when it executes tasting, it is called the gustatory (al-dha'iqah). Similarly, when it produces growth within the body, it is called the vegetative (al-namiyah); and when it executes thought and discernment, it is called the rational (al-natiqah).

Verily, the Soul in its essence is a substance, and its co-presence with the body across length and breadth is accidental, serving a specific purpose.
