Their diseases are of four types: accumulated ignorances (al-jahalat al-mutarakimah), depraved character traits (al-akhlaq al-radiah), corrupt views (al-ara' al-fasidah), and evil deeds (al-a'mal al-sayyi'ah).

Know that the Soul flows through the air, connected to the power of light and radiance, governing corporeal matters, and harmonizing material natures (al-taba'i' al-jurmaniyyah); and the spiritual forces of the stars are intimately connected to the world of the atmosphere.

Know that the substance of the Soul is subtler and more intensely spiritual than the substances of both air and light combined. The proof of this is its immediate reception of the impressions (rusum) of all sensible objects. This is because the substance of the Soul is a celestial substance, its realm is a spiritual realm, and it is alive by its very essence.

The Soul is also a celestial, spiritual, luminous, buoyant, and active substance that is incorruptible; its defining trait is its perception of the forms of things. Its likeness in perceiving the forms of existing things—both among sensibles (mahsusat) and intelligibles (ma'qulat)—is exactly that of a mirror.
