Souls differ only according to the variance of their inherent faculties, and the variance of their faculties corresponds to the diversity of their actions, sciences, and structural distinctions—just as the variance of bodies corresponds to the diversity of their physical accidents (a'rad). Verily, the primary matter of the Soul (hayula al-nafs) is the direct, innovated object of the Creator's invention not from any other thing. Verily, the particular souls (al-anfus al-juz'iyyah) are those that exist beneath the celestial sphere of the Moon. These particular souls are lights, radiances, and illuminations effused from the Universal Soul, scattered from it throughout the universe, and flowing through all bodies from the Encompassing Sphere down to the furthest limit of the sphere of the Earth.
Know that your soul is one of these particular souls, and it is a faculty among the faculties of the Universal, Celestial Soul—neither identical to it nor entirely separated from it. This is exactly how your body is a part among the parts of the universal body of the cosmos—neither encompassing the whole of it nor entirely separate from it.
Verily, the body of the cosmos in its entirety is just like the body of a single human being.
