They accompanied the world with anxieties and were content therein with prolonged sorrows; so they did not look upon it with the eye of a desirer, nor did they take provision from it except like the provision of a rider. They humble their souls in the contentment of their Master, and they placed the Hereafter before their eyes. Withered are their lips, empty are their bellies, grieving are their hearts, emaciated are their bodies, weeping are their eyes. They wore tattered rags and inhabited empty wildernesses. The night has slaughtered them with the knives of sleeplessness; they are empty-bellied due to the length of the night-journey, disheveled of hair due to the lack of grooming. They prepared themselves for departure and rest, and no state distracted them from their state. He manifests to them with the splendor of His beauty and appears with His nobility to His allies; so He gives them to drink, upon His manifestation to them, a cup of the wine of beauty and the sweet spring of union, after which they shall never thirst. And their custom was scrupulousness and asceticism, peace be upon them."
