And the common sense (al-hiss al-mushtarak) according to the sages is the power in which the forms of sensory particulars are imprinted by the outward senses. And creation (khalq) and command (amr) express the world of the unseen and the witnessed, and the earthly and heavenly kingdoms. And the intellect and the soul in the world of creation are that which belongs to matter, while the world of command is that which is abstract from matter: {His command is only when He intends a thing that He says to it, "Be," and it is} 1
And for the shadow (zill) in the nomenclature of the Sufis are numerous meanings: so the first shadow is the First Intellect, for it is the first essence that appeared by His light, the Exalted; and the shadow of God is the perfect man who is realized in the Oneness Presence. So just as the brightness of the full moon is witnessed at night and is not witnessed with the presence of the sun due to the dominance of its light over its brightness, likewise is my existence with the existence of my beloved, due to the victory of the authority of existence over every existent, for there is no existence for humanity during the authority of reality.
