the rational, holy, angelic soul [al-natiqah al-qudsiyyah al-malakiyyah], and the universal divine soul [al-kulliyyah al-ilahiyyah]. Every single one of these souls possesses five distinct faculties [quwa] and two unique defining properties [khasiyyatan].
The vegetative soul has five faculties: attractive [jadhibah], digestive [hadhimah], retentive [masikah], expulsive [dafi'ah], and nutritive [murabbiyah]; and its two properties are growth and decay, and its physical source of emanation is the liver.
The sensory animal soul has five faculties: hearing, sight, smell, taste, and touch; and its two properties are desire/contentment [al-rida] and anger, and its physical source of emanation is the heart.
The rational, holy, angelic soul has five faculties: thought [fikr], recollection [dhikr], knowledge ['ilm], clemency [hilm], and vigilance [nabahah]; it has no physical source of emanation, and it is the closest resembling thing to pure angelic essences, possessing two properties: structural purity [al-nazahah] and wisdom.
