[155] And Sheikh Mahmud b. 'Amr said in his epistle that the Scholar—His glory is mighty—said: 'The soul of man is the most precious essence within him; it organizes his individual nature, directs his physical movements, and integrates his organic instruments. It is neither entirely separate [mubayanah] from him, nor is it identically him. Rather, it is simply a soul unto him, distinct from the mere name of the human being, and it cannot be recognized except through him. Whenever the word "soul" is uttered in isolation, it remains unknown until it is contextually bound to him.
[156] And he said in another place: 'Action, sight, and hearing all belong entirely to the soul, not to the physical senses. For when a human being’s soul departs while their bodily organs remain intact, all of their movements and endeavors instantly cease.'
[157] And it is narrated from Pythagoras the Sage—peace be upon him: 'The noble sages who are firmly grounded in knowledge said that through the purity of their souls and the illumination of their intellects, they witnessed other, non-corporeal essences.
