"reward" (yajziya). It is this Lām that links the first part of the verse to the second, making the latter an inevitable result of a standing premise: the return of creation to life is for the sake of recompense for one's deeds.

The action described is not instantaneous nor simultaneous with the new form, but rather precedes it. This is evidenced by the past tense used in the phrase {because of what you used to do} 1 . As for the Almighty's saying: {Allah begins creation; then He repeats it; then to Him you will be returned} 2 , it signifies that the return is to God and no other. This points to a pre-existence prior to the start of creation, an existence that resides within the knowledge of God. This is indicated by the verb "returned" (turja'un), for returning to a place is evidence of a prior existence in that place. Had it been otherwise, the verse would have said, "then to Him you shall go" or "be taken." Furthermore, the return is not voluntary, as evidenced by the use of the passive voice.
