We provide from His miracles and powers—those which cannot be refuted—what suffices for the purpose and leads to the obligation; and from His indications toward His Essence, His allusions, His explicit declarations, and His evidences of His spiritual reality (Ma'nawiyyah) within His manifestations. Even so, what we explain, clarify, and mention in this book of ours regarding His miracles is but a part of the parts that have no end for us and no limit to their goal.
[17] Among that is the report known as "The Report of the Reins" (Khabar al-A'inna), traced back through its chain of transmission from our Master Salman al-Farsi—peace be from him. Salman said: "When the people devoted themselves to the allegiance of the Calf and gave their pledge on the Day of Saqifa, I spoke and delivered a sermon, saying in Persian: 'Kardi bi-kardi wa haqq Amir al-Mu'minin bi-turdi Amir al-Nahl yardi.' Its interpretation is: 'You knew, then you acted until you overcame the Master of the Command; you imitated his saints and claimed what was not yours by right.'
The people then rose as one and wrung my neck as one wrings 'Ukadhi leather. So I went out to the cemetery (al-Jabbana), showing them that I was complaining of what had befallen me to my Master. My Master, the Commander of the Faithful, followed me along with al-Hasan, al-Husayn, and al-Miqdad.
