Without dispute, when the Confederates (al-Ahzab) were defeated, if a fleeing man encountered [him], that man would say: "This is Ali behind me!" The number of the people on that day was ninety thousand men, and our Master manifested himself on that day in ninety thousand forms—and all of them were a single form, which is the form of the Anza' al-Batin, the Commander of the Faithful—mighty is his might. Everyone who was struck by an arrow saw only that Ali had shot him, and whoever was struck by a sword would say: "Ali struck me." As for all other types of killing, the slain saw only that our Master, the Commander of the Faithful—mighty is his might—was his slayer.
