Against those who oppressively conspired against him, And against those who exceeded limits (Ghalā) in his love, or fell short (Qassar).

Without a doubt, [in his view] we are among the Ghalat (Extremists). For the 'Extremist' is the one who professes the Divinity/Meaning (Ma'nawiyya) of the Prince of the Believers (Ali), may his power be exalted.
The 'Short-faller' (al-Muqassir) is the one who lowers our Master, the Prince of the Believers, to the rank of the 'Gate' (Bab). As for the Delegationist (al-Mufawwid), he places him at the rank of the 'Name' (Ism). Both are equally incorrect and ignoble.
Indeed, the brilliant and virtuous scholar, Sheikh Bakhtiyar ibn Abi Mansur—mentioned previously—was overcome by protective jealousy for the Knowledge (al-Ghayra 'ala al-'Ilm) when he heard al-Awni’s poem and his disavowal of those who 'exceed limits' and those who 'fall short.' This is as Abu Tammam (Habib ibn Aws al-Ta’i)—may Allah have mercy on him—said in his poem:
