Among what was preserved from him and what he recited of his own poetry are these verses:
You gave me a cup to drink and made me drunk
So my intoxication is from You, not from the cup
You cast me into the depths of the sea of longing
Into an abyss that burns my very breath
At times its tide flings me away
And at times I crawl upon my head
I am a drowning man, and longing is my slayer
O my sovereignty, return to the head
Regarding his words: 'You gave me a cup to drink and made me drunk,' he is referring to the Eternal Pre-existent who gave him the drink of His Gnosis (Ma'rifa) through the tongue of one of His Saints (Wali). It is as if he placed the 'cup' in the station of the one who introduced him to Monotheism (Tawhid), and made the 'wine' within the cup represent the Gnosis which, once it mingles with the heart of a believer, leaves them thirsting for nothing else.
