Knowing Allah Without Sight & The Sign of the Doubting Ignoramus

[35] The Lord Ja'far ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq—Glorified be His Might—said: "O people of faith and dwellings of secrecy (kitman)! Reflect, remember, and take heed during the heedlessness of the devils. For whoever claims that he knows Allah without vision (ru’ya) has gone astray and disbelieved. The sign of the doubting ignoramus is the tearing of the veiled curtain and the divulging of the hidden secret (al-sirr al-maknun) so that people may know what he knows of himself. If the servant denies what he has seen, then regarding what he sees, he is in doubt and suspicion."

[36] And His saying—Glorified be His Might: "It is of the attribute of the Sage (al-Hakim) that he worships none but an Existing, Manifest One. For that which is absent and cannot be seen is likely to be nothing at all. Verily, the Almighty, the All-Wise, when He created the creation, He called them to His Oneness; then He appeared (zahara) among them, moving through that which they move through. So whoever recognized Him there [in the pre-existence] recognizes Him here; and whoever denied Him there denies Him here. And Hell suffices as a blazing fire.
